Voices from the field: Lode Sabbe
As part of the Belgian XR Report 2025, we’re giving the floor to voices from the field. Professionals from across XR Valley’s key sectors share their views on the current state and future potential of XR in Belgium. From education to industry, culture to healthcare — where do we stand today, and where could we be headed next?
This edition: Lode Sabbe (UZ Gent) from the perspective of Healthcare
“Over the past decade, I have gained extensive experience with XR technology in a rehabilitation context. During this time, I have witnessed the technology evolve significantly and noted the growing interest in its application within healthcare. XR is increasingly utilised across various domains such as clinical applications (e.g., rehabilitation), education (e.g., simulation training), and product development - an encouraging trend that warrants support.”
“However, Belgium faces specific challenges. The adoption of XR technology and knowledge development in healthcare progresses relatively slowly compared to other sectors and the pace of product innovation. Despite internationally renowned game development programs, many XR innovations emerge outside Belgium, representing a missed opportunity for the country’s innovation landscape.”
“European regulations, including MDR, GDPR, and the AI Act, provide clear frameworks but also create competitive disadvantages compared to countries like the United States and certain Asian regions, where legislation is often less restrictive. This regulatory environment can hinder innovation and decelerate development processes.”
“Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic about the future. Artificial intelligence has the potential to accelerate development processes, reduce costs, and align XR solutions more closely with the needs of healthcare providers and patients. The synergy between AI and XR presents promising opportunities to advance effective applications within healthcare.”
