Voices from the field: Fabian Di Fiore
As part of the Belgian XR Report 2025, we’re giving the floor to voices from the field. Professionals from across XR Valley’s key sectors share their views on the current state and future potential of XR in Belgium. From education to industry, culture to healthcare — where do we stand today, and where could we be headed next?
This edition: Fabian Di Fiore (UHasselt) from the perspective of Education & Training
“As coordinator of the XR-Huis, a hub for XR research, development, and innovation at the Digital Future Lab of Hasselt University, I am privileged to operate at the intersection of academia, industry, and public sector needs. Our mission is to create meaningful XR solutions by bridging scientific insight, technological exploration, and real-world application.”
“A key opportunity we’ve observed lies in the use of XR for training and simulation, particularly in psychomotor skills development. The Belgian XR ecosystem is showing strong momentum in this area, especially when solutions are co-designed with domain experts and validated through user studies. Through public funded projects and our work with SMEs we’ve demonstrated how XR can enhance safety, performance, and learning outcomes in both industrial and professional contexts.”
“However, a recurring challenge is scalability. While many solution providers excel at prototyping and pilot projects, we need better pathways for broad implementation and standardization, especially for SMEs. Stronger collaboration frameworks and visibility into the ecosystem’s capabilities are crucial.”
“I hope this ecosystem mapping will highlight not just who is building XR in Belgium, but also how we can more effectively collaborate, share expertise, and turn innovation into lasting impact.”
