Voices from the field: Gregg Young

As part of the Belgian XR Report 2025, we’re giving the floor to voices from the field. Professionals from across XR Valley’s key sectors share their views on the current state and future potential of XR in Belgium. From education to industry, culture to healthcare — where do we stand today, and where could we be headed next?

This edition: Gregg Young (VRT Innovation) from the perspective of Entertainment & Media

“My name is Gregg Young and I lead the innovation lab at VRT, where we work with a small, agile team focusing on innovative technologies that are closely connected to daily production. We experiment with various tools such as game engines for virtual productions, VR and game development, AI for automatic video editing and image enhancement, TouchDesigner for efficient workflows, and much more.”

“We live in an increasingly hybrid world, where our digital and physical realities merge. We already enhance our environment with augmented elements such as facial filters, AR navigation, or virtual avatars performing in concert halls. We all have our own identity on social platforms, and these are evolving into full-fledged 3D worlds where we play, meet each other, and even trade - think of Fortnite, Roblox, or Minecraft.”

“This evolution is only just beginning. As user-friendly XR devices (such as lightweight and portable headsets) become mainstream, this digital shift will accelerate even further.”

“That's why it's crucial for Belgium to actively monitor these developments. We already have a strong ecosystem of talent, companies, and creative makers here - from game studios and music festivals to film and TV production - that compete internationally.”

“By structurally mapping, supporting, and analyzing this ecosystem as a full-fledged sector, we can strengthen our position, stimulate collaboration, and help shape the future of this digital reality.”
